Tips To Perfect Your 3D Printing Files

You want to ensure that your design is compliant with all rules and ready for upload when you finally have the chance to get your 3D printing project started. However, these top tips will ensure that every file is printable.

#1: Make sure your model is watertight

All surfaces must be connected to each other in order for your file to print. Before you make your 3d model design, take a look at your model. 

#2: Add wall thickness to volume

Each surface of your 3D model should have a defined wall thickness. Wall thickness simply refers to the distance between a surface on your model and its opposite sheer side. 

It is possible to create so-called "paper-thin" surfaces using 3D modeling software. These thin surfaces can be used for visual purposes, such as games, but do not include any information about the thickness.

#3: Make sure to limit the size of small details

Details, which are small decorative parts such as embossed text or engraved text must be at a specific size or they will not appear in the printed object. You must be able to read the following:

#4: Correctly upload grouped models

Grouped models are a reason why an order can be canceled. This is where one part is repeated multiple times in the same file. If this happens, you might see a stack of disconnected rings. 

It is important to upload each design separately. If you require more than one design, you can enjoy a volume discount. If you are printing with Polyamide, Alumide, you might also consider adding a grid container.

#5: Make a model and add some escape holes.

Although there are many benefits to building a solid model, like increased strength and durability, it is understandable that more material will result in a more expensive design. 

You can reduce the cost of each item printed by creating a hollow model with escape holes to allow for any extra printing material. For reference, take a look at this example!
