When should Your Child Stop Sucking Their Thumb?

Babies use thumb sucking to soothe and calm down themselves. Thumb-sucking begins before birth in the utero.

This can help babies cope with stress. You can also know more about how to stop finger sucking through various online sources.

There are many benefits to having children suck on their thumbs instead of pacifiers: thumbs are always there, do not fall to the floor, are not tied to children's clothes with strings that they can hide or hold, and are under the child's control.

Most kids can suck their thumbs without destroying the order of their teeth or jaw until their permanent teeth appear at 4 to 6 years of age. Also, not all thumb suckers are dangerous.

Children who passively put their thumb in their mouth had less difficulty than kids who suck aggressively. Examine your child's method. If she is thumb-sucking vigorously, you should break the habit around age four.

However, you may not need to intervene at all. Children usually stop thumb sucking when they produce other means of calming and comforting themselves, usually around age 4 or 5, although some children suck their thumbs at night or from time to time to deal with stress.

You don't have to worry about your child's thumb-sucking until their permanent teeth pop in. However, if you want to break the habit beforehand, try to find the reason behind it.
