Reasons For Use Of Fluoride In Preventing Dental Decay

Dental decay is understood by many different names including dental caries or cavities. The process of decay takes place when there is irreversible harm that occurs to the hard tissues of the teeth (enamel, dentin, or cementum).

The presentation of corrosion can be highly variable in each person. Detection can be found visibly with dental exams, by dental intraoral x-rays or by dental laser detection devices. Using the fluoride procedure  to deter dental decay has been in practice for decades.

The application of fluoride is used as a medication to discourage the demineralization of their teeth by strengthening tooth enamel.

Fluoride treatment may include the application of fluoride in a gel, varnish, paste, or mouthwash. Some of those applications can happen at home while some can occur only in a dental office.

Dental office fluoride treatment generally happens with the use of prescription gels administered at a mouth tray or the use of fluoride varnish.

Though both approaches are effective, the use of fluoride varnish with its simplicity of application offers a practical benefit.

Fluoride varnish is”painted” on the teeth with a brush and forms a film when it comes into contact with saliva. When this happens, it solidifies and forms a slightly tinted film that remains on the tooth until it’s brushed during regular brushing.

Since its application to help reinforce tooth enamel is simpler and the flavor is far better than a gel, it is a good tool to be used along with a professional dental cleaning.
